33-year-old mother claimed her 2-year-old daughter wandered out of the apartment when reporting the girl missing but actually killed the toddler and then discarded her body in the trash; charged

Alabama – In a harrowing incident in Alabama, a 33-year-old mother, identified as A. Reid, is now facing the most serious criminal charges after authorities say she killed her own toddler and then attempted to hide the crime by falsely reporting the child missing. Reid has been charged with capital murder and abuse of a corpse in connection with the death of her 2-year-old daughter.

Police say the charges stem from an investigation that revealed Reid allegedly killed the toddler weeks before reporting her missing and then disposed of the child’s body in a dumpster inside her apartment complex. The disturbing case unfolded over several weeks, beginning with a frantic missing-child report and ending with investigators concluding that the girl had been dead long before police were ever notified.

The investigation began during the early morning hours of Feb. 16, when Reid contacted authorities claiming her daughter had vanished from their apartment. According to police, Reid told officers she discovered the front door open and realized her 2-year-old daughter was gone. She claimed the child may have wandered out of the apartment during the night. Authorities immediately launched a search for the 2-year-old girl, fearing the young child might be alone and in danger.

However, investigators soon began noticing problems with the story being told. Police said there were inconsistencies in the information Reid provided, which led detectives to look more closely into what had really happened. Despite the growing concern surrounding the case, officers said other family members had been fully cooperative with the investigation, while Reid herself appeared evasive and reluctant to provide clear answers.

As detectives continued working the case, a disturbing discovery began to emerge. Investigators determined that the toddler had not been seen alive for weeks before her mother ever reported her missing. “We are confident that Reid made a false report that the girl walked out of the apartment at 3 a.m.,” Police Chief M. Moore said during an earlier press conference. Authorities later confirmed that the toddler had not been seen alive since Christmas Day.

As investigators dug deeper into the timeline, they obtained crucial video evidence from a neighbor’s surveillance camera. The footage reportedly showed Reid walking toward a dumpster at the apartment complex while pulling a rolling duffel bag. According to investigators, the video was recorded at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 25, 2025. Police believe the toddler’s body had been placed inside the bag before being thrown away. Two days later, the same surveillance camera allegedly captured Reid returning to the dumpster again. This time, authorities say she disposed of toys and other belongings believed to belong to the young girl, further suggesting that the child had already been killed. The footage became a key piece of evidence in the case.

During a news conference announcing the new charges, Police Chief Moore spoke about the devastating findings of the investigation. “Today is an especially heartbreaking day for our community. The loss of a child, the most precious and innocent members of our society, is something that cannot be ignored and will never be forgotten,” Moore said. He then revealed what investigators had concluded. “Through the careful and methodical work of investigators, we have reached the heartbreaking and horrific conclusion that her mother, her caretaker, the one that should have been there to keep her safe, willfully murdered the girl and placed her in a duffel bag and discarded her in a dumpster.” Although investigators believe the child’s body was placed in the trash shortly after Christmas, it has not yet been recovered.

Authorities now believe the toddler’s remains were eventually transported to the county landfill. Sheriff S. Byrd explained that investigators have worked to narrow the search area by analyzing garbage truck schedules, GPS data, and landfill maps. The targeted search area measures roughly 200 feet by 100 feet and is estimated to be 8 to 10 feet deep in waste. Officials say the search will be extremely difficult and could take months. According to Byrd, crews must carefully and methodically dig through the landfill to locate any possible evidence.

District Attorney J. Tarbox confirmed that Reid will appear in court on the new felony charges. Prosecutors have already indicated they intend to pursue the death penalty. “The evidence shows that Reid killed her daughter, literally threw her in the trash, and then engaged in a 53-day campaign of deceit, lies, manipulation, and destruction of evidence before she finally reported her missing on Feb. 16,” Tarbox said. “Her conduct speaks for itself, and I believe this preliminary decision to seek the death penalty conforms to our community’s beliefs about this case and our shared values about how we value and seek to protect the most innocent among us, our children.” The case remains ongoing as investigators continue searching for the girl’s remains and prosecutors prepare for the upcoming court proceedings.
