93-year-old woman died after a teenage boy opened fire during a disagreement with others inside her home and shot her to death, wounded 2 others; teenager charged

Tennessee – In a shocking incident in Tennessee, a teenage boy, identified as D. Taylor, has been charged after authorities say he opened fire inside a home during a dispute, killing a 93-year-old woman, identified as G. Harris, who had nothing to do with the argument.

Taylor, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, now faces first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of aggravated assault. Prosecutors say the charges stem from a violent shooting inside the home of Harris, a respected community member whose life was cut short during the confrontation. Authorities allege that Taylor fired multiple gunshots during a disagreement with people inside the house. The gunfire struck three women, including Harris, who died at the scene. The case has since moved forward in court, with prosecutors confirming that Taylor will be tried as an adult.

The tragic events unfolded on Jan. 17, 2024, when police officers were called to a residence after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they discovered a chaotic scene inside the home. Three women had been struck by gunfire. Among them was 93-year-old Harris. First responders quickly assessed the victims. Sadly, Harris had already died from her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two victims, both women, were rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, according to officials from the District Attorney’s Office.

Investigators soon began working to determine how the violence had started. Detectives learned that the shooting appeared to stem from a disagreement between at least one of the victims and two men who had been present at the home. Authorities believe the conflict escalated rapidly before gunfire erupted. However, officials made clear that Harris herself had nothing to do with the dispute that led to the violence. State Rep. A. Parkinson spoke publicly about the tragedy and emphasized that the elderly woman was not involved in the argument. “She had nothing to do with that and the fact that here [is that] one of our matriarchs in the community has lost her life because of some nonsense that’s going on probably with younger people,” Parkinson said.

As investigators examined the scene and gathered witness statements, they began to identify the person responsible for the shooting. Authorities eventually determined that Taylor was responsible for these crimes, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Although the shooting occurred in early 2024, the case continued developing over time as investigators built their case. Nearly a year and a half later, on July 22, 2025, a juvenile petition was issued for Taylor’s arrest. Law enforcement officers, working alongside the U.S. Marshals Service, tracked Taylor. Officers surrounded the property and successfully took him into custody two days later. Following his arrest, prosecutors reviewed the case and made the decision to move the matter to adult criminal court.

The District Attorney’s Office later confirmed that Taylor’s case had officially been transferred to the adult system. A judge set his bond at $1 million as the legal proceedings continue. District Attorney S. Mulroy described the facts of the case as deeply troubling. “The facts of this case are deeply disturbing,” Mulroy said. “A 93-year-old woman lost her life in her own home, and two others were critically injured. Our hearts are with Ms. Harris’s family and loved ones as they continue to endure this unimaginable loss. We are committed to pursuing justice and ensuring accountability as this case moves forward in criminal court.”

Beyond the shocking violence of the crime, the loss of Harris has left a profound impact on her community. Her obituary describes a long life dedicated to helping others. Harris spent many years working as a public school teacher, where she helped educate generations of students. Education, according to her family, was always a central value in her life. Even after retiring more than four decades ago, Harris remained deeply committed to serving her community. She volunteered regularly at her church, helped deliver meals to those in need, and even taught inmates at the correctional facility. Her life was marked by service, compassion, and dedication to others. The tragic circumstances of her death have only deepened the sense of loss felt by those who knew her.

With Taylor now facing multiple serious charges, the case will continue to move through the adult criminal justice system. Prosecutors have made it clear that they intend to pursue accountability for the shooting that left one woman dead and two others severely injured. As the legal process continues, the focus remains on seeking justice for Harris—a woman remembered for her decades of service, kindness, and commitment to helping others in her community.
