West Fargo Transfer Station to close for two weeks as city moves forward with necessary equipment replacement

West Fargo, North Dakota – A temporary shutdown of a key waste facility in West Fargo is set to impact how residents handle trash and recycling for two weeks, as city officials move forward with a necessary equipment upgrade.

The Transfer Station will be closed starting Monday, April 6, and will remain unavailable through Monday, April 20. The closure is tied to a planned replacement of the facility’s scale, a piece of equipment that has reached the end of its usable life. City leaders had already approved the replacement earlier this spring after determining that the existing scale was no longer reliable due to age, worn components, and ongoing deck clearance issues.

Temporary Changes for Waste and Recycling Services

During this closure period, residents will need to adjust how they manage certain types of waste. While the Transfer Station will not be operating, alternative options have been provided to help limit disruption.

Recycling can still be dropped off at the Department of Sanitation, located at 117 8th Street West, as well as at the Eagle Run Water Tower near 40th Avenue West and Sheyenne Street. These sites will serve as the main locations for recycling while the primary facility is closed.

For larger items, such as furniture or other bulky materials, residents are encouraged to schedule a pickup. This can be done through the Public Works section of the city’s website or by calling 701-515-5400. Officials emphasized that this service will remain active during the shutdown, helping residents avoid buildup of oversized waste at home.

However, not all services will be available during this time. Disposal of excess household waste and metal recycling will be temporarily paused until the Transfer Station reopens. This limitation means residents may need to plan ahead or delay certain disposal activities until normal operations resume.

Equipment Upgrade Aimed at Long Term Improvement

City officials explained that replacing the scale is necessary to ensure the facility can continue operating safely and accurately in the future. The current system has experienced wear over time, leading to reduced performance and structural concerns tied to its deck clearance.

By completing this replacement now, the city aims to avoid larger issues later and improve the overall reliability of the Transfer Station once it returns to service.

Residents with questions or concerns about the closure or available services are encouraged to contact Public Works directly at 701-515-5400. Officials noted that clear communication and planning will help minimize inconvenience during the two-week shutdown period.

Once the work is completed and the new scale is installed, the Transfer Station is expected to reopen and resume full operations, restoring all waste and recycling services for the community.
