North Dakota launches first statewide Stroll N Roll event for all ages and abilities

Fargo, North Dakota – Public health leaders across North Dakota are preparing to bring communities together through movement and connection as part of a new statewide initiative tied to National Public Health Week.

All 28 local public health units in the state will take part in “Stroll N Roll North Dakota,” a coordinated event designed to encourage residents to stay active while also building stronger social ties. The event will take place throughout the day on Wednesday, April 8, giving people the flexibility to participate at a time that works best for them.

Organizers say the initiative is open to everyone, regardless of age or ability. Participants can choose how they want to take part, whether by walking, biking, rollerblading, or using wheelchairs, strollers, or other mobility devices. There is no minimum time requirement, but adults are encouraged to aim for at least 30 minutes of activity, aligning with guidance from the American Heart Association.

Statewide effort promotes movement and connection

The event is sponsored by the North Dakota State Association of City and County Health Officials, which works to coordinate public health efforts across the state. Leaders say this is the first time such a statewide activity has been organized in this way, marking a new approach to engaging communities in health-focused initiatives.

National Public Health Week, which is recognized each year, highlights the importance of public health and the many ways it supports communities. The 2026 theme, “Ready. Set. Action!” focuses on improving lives, protecting families, and strengthening neighborhoods through health programs and services.

“Stroll N Roll North Dakota aims to promote both physical activity and social connection, which we know are critical to our overall health,” says Jenn Faul, Director of Fargo Cass Public Health (FCPH). “Whether joining our local group walk or heading out on your own, we encourage community members to take part in a way that works best for them.”

Health officials say regular physical activity can support heart health, improve mental well-being, and help prevent chronic diseases. At the same time, events like this give people a chance to connect with others, which is also an important part of overall wellness.

Local events invite community participation

In Fargo, Fargo Cass Public Health is organizing a group walk as part of the statewide effort. The walk is scheduled for April 8 from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Participants will gather at the outside entrance of the main building located at 1240 25th Street South before walking laps around the block. Individuals are welcome to complete as many laps as they choose.

Officials emphasize that there is no cost to participate and no formal registration is required. Families, seniors, youth groups, workplaces, and community organizations are all encouraged to get involved.

Participants are also invited to share their experiences by posting photos on social media using the hashtag #StrollNRollND, helping to spread awareness and encourage others to join.

By combining simple physical activity with a sense of community, organizers hope the event will inspire residents to take small steps toward healthier lifestyles while reinforcing the importance of public health efforts across North Dakota.
