North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong orders flags lowered statewide in observance of Memorial Day

Bismarck, North Dakota – North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong has ordered all United States and North Dakota flags at government buildings to be flown at half-staff on Memorial Day as the state prepares to honor military members who lost their lives while serving the country.

According to the governor’s office, the flags will remain at half-staff until noon on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day. Armstrong is also encouraging residents and businesses across North Dakota to participate by lowering flags at homes and private properties during the morning hours.

The annual observance is meant to recognize and remember American service members who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces.

Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned Across North Dakota

Governor Armstrong is expected to personally participate in a Memorial Day ceremony at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery located south of Mandan along State Highway 1806. The event is scheduled to begin at noon Monday and will honor the nation’s fallen military heroes.

State officials said the ceremony is free and open to the public. Residents unable to attend in person will also be able to watch the event through a livestream hosted by the North Dakota National Guard.

Lieutenant Governor Michelle Strinden will also take part in Memorial Day events later that afternoon. She is scheduled to deliver remarks during a ceremony at 3 p.m. at the Fargo National Cemetery near Harwood.

Memorial Day ceremonies held throughout North Dakota each year bring together veterans, military families, elected leaders, and community members to reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of American service members. The lowering of flags to half-staff remains one of the most visible traditions connected to the national day of remembrance.
