Fargo officials warn residents not to panic during scheduled outdoor siren maintenance activities

Fargo, North Dakota – Residents across Fargo may hear outdoor warning sirens sounding at different times during the week of May 25 through May 29 as the city conducts routine maintenance on its emergency alert system.

According to the City of Fargo, crews will perform preventative maintenance on all 37 outdoor warning sirens throughout the city. During the maintenance work, individual sirens will be briefly activated during daytime hours as technicians test equipment and confirm the system is operating properly.

City officials emphasized that these siren activations are planned and are not connected to actual emergencies. Residents who hear short siren sounds during the maintenance period are not expected to seek shelter unless a real emergency is taking place.

Officials explained that regular maintenance is important to ensure the outdoor warning system remains dependable during severe weather events or other emergencies requiring immediate public alerts.

Fargo Encourages Residents to Stay Prepared

Alongside the maintenance announcement, the City of Fargo’s Office of Emergency Management encouraged residents to sign up for Cass Clay Alerts, a free emergency notification system that delivers warnings directly to phones and email accounts.

Officials also recommended that households keep NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radios equipped with Specific Area Message Encoding, commonly known as SAME technology. These radios can continue delivering weather and emergency alerts even during power outages or cellular service disruptions.

City leaders stressed that multiple emergency notification methods are important because outdoor warning sirens are primarily designed to alert people who are outside.

Fargo also conducts routine full-system siren tests throughout the year. Officials confirmed that the city’s regularly scheduled monthly siren test will still take place on Wednesday, June 3, at 1 p.m. The city normally performs full outdoor warning siren testing on the first Wednesday of every month.

Residents are again being reminded that no action is needed during either the maintenance work or scheduled testing periods.

What Residents Should Do if Unsure

Emergency officials said anyone uncertain whether a siren activation is part of a test or a real emergency should move indoors immediately and seek additional information from trusted official sources.

Recommended sources include Cass Clay Alerts notifications, local media outlets, updates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Grand Forks, and official City of Fargo communication channels.

City officials said staying informed and understanding the difference between routine testing and emergency alerts can help reduce confusion while ensuring residents remain prepared during severe weather season and other emergency situations.

Residents with questions about the siren system may contact the Office of Emergency Management at 701.476.4069 or through the City of Fargo website. Please do not call 9-1-1 with questions about siren testing or maintenance. Call 9-1-1 only for emergencies.
