Fargo Fire Department opens application period for new firefighter positions

Fargo, North Dakota – The Fargo Fire Department is preparing to welcome a new class of firefighters and will begin accepting applications for open positions starting Monday, March 2. The annual hiring window will remain open through Friday, April 3. After the application period closes, department officials will interview and evaluate qualified candidates to fill available roles.

Fire Chief Gary Lorenz encouraged individuals from all backgrounds to consider applying and serving their community.

“If you’ve ever felt called to serve as a firefighter, this year brings a new opportunity to join Fargo’s world-class department. We welcome women and men of all backgrounds to take that next step and apply,” Fire Chief Gary Lorenz said. “If you’re someone who thrives on teamwork, is driven to keep learning and wants to make a difference in your community, we’d be proud to have you on our team.”

Training, salary and qualifications

New firefighters will begin with a starting annual salary of $66,947 and receive a comprehensive benefits package beginning on their first day of training. No prior firefighting experience is required, making the opportunity accessible to individuals seeking a new career path in public service.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and meet several minimum qualifications. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license, hold a high school diploma or GED (college credits are preferred), be in sound mental and physical health, and demonstrate the ability to understand written and spoken English.

Successful applicants will participate in the Metro Fire Academy, a joint training program operated by the Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead Fire Departments. The 18-week academy combines classroom instruction with hands-on skills development, ride-alongs, and live burn scenarios. The program provides recruits with real-world training in a controlled setting and prepares them for emergency response duties.

Upon completion of the academy, recruits earn firefighter certification along with Emergency Medical Technician credentials, equipping them with the skills needed to respond to fires, medical emergencies, and other critical incidents.

The Fargo Fire Department says the hiring process is an opportunity to build a strong, diverse team committed to protecting the community. Firefighters serve on the front lines during emergencies and play a vital role in public safety, prevention, and education.

Those interested in applying can submit applications online between March 2 and April 3. Additional information about careers with the department is available here, or by contacting Division Chief Craig Nelson at 701-241-8132.

Officials say they are seeking motivated individuals ready to serve, learn, and make a lasting impact in the Fargo community.
