Cass County Sheriff’s Office warns residents about scam callers impersonating deputies and making false court claims

Fargo, North Dakota – Residents in the Fargo–Moorhead area are being urged to stay alert after local authorities reported a resurfacing phone scam designed to frighten individuals into compliance. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the scheme involves callers impersonating law enforcement officers and falsely claiming legal consequences.

Officials reported that at least one call originated from the phone number 701-289-6871. During the call, the individual falsely identified themselves as a deputy with the sheriff’s office and told the resident they had missed a court date. Authorities warn that such tactics are commonly used to create panic and pressure victims into providing personal information or making payments.

Scam Imposter Claims to Be Deputy

The sheriff’s office advises the public to use caution when receiving unexpected calls from anyone claiming to be a law enforcement officer. Officials stress that residents should not provide personal or financial information over the phone unless they have verified the caller’s identity.

To confirm whether a call is legitimate, residents are encouraged to follow several verification steps:

  1. Hang up immediately if the call seems suspicious.

  2. Call Red River Regional Dispatch at (701) 451-7660 and request to speak with the deputy in question.

  3. An on-duty deputy will confirm whether the call was legitimate.

Authorities say they understand that repeated scam attempts can cause confusion and concern. With an increase in fraudulent calls reported, law enforcement acknowledges that residents may question whether a call is genuine.

Officials emphasize that verifying information through trusted channels is the best defense against fraud. They stress that taking a moment to confirm details can prevent financial loss and protect personal information.

Community members are encouraged to share this warning with family members, especially older adults who are often targeted by impersonation scams. Remaining cautious and verifying suspicious calls can help stop scammers and protect others from becoming victims.
