Construction set to start on long-awaited underpass project in Grand Forks to ease congestion, enhance safety

Grand Forks, North Dakota – A major construction effort is set to begin in Grand Forks, bringing long-term changes aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in one of the city’s busiest areas.
Starting Monday, April 20, crews will begin work on the 42nd Street and DeMers Avenue Underpass project, a plan that is expected to take two years to complete. The project has been in discussion for years and is seen as a key step toward reducing congestion and creating a more reliable travel experience for both residents and visitors.
Major changes to traffic and travel routes
The project will separate roadway traffic from rail traffic by building two underpasses. As part of the work, 42nd Street will be lowered beneath newly constructed bridges—one carrying DeMers Avenue traffic and another supporting BNSF rail traffic. This design will remove the need for vehicles to stop for passing trains, which has long caused delays in the area.
While the final result is expected to improve daily travel, the construction phase will bring noticeable disruptions. Drivers should expect changing traffic patterns, lane shifts, and extended closures.
Beginning next month, a major portion of 42nd Street will be closed between James Ray Drive and 43rd Street. This closure will remain in place through the 2026 construction season. During that time, traffic will be redirected using a detour along Washington Street.
DeMers Avenue, however, will continue to allow east-west travel, though drivers may need to adjust to temporary traffic setups as construction progresses.
In addition to this project, other nearby work could further impact travel. Construction along Interstate 29 between Exit 138 and Exit 145, development of the Altru Sports Complex along 42nd Street, and updates to Ray Richards Golf Course are all taking place in the same general area.
Officials are urging motorists to slow down, follow posted signs, and remain cautious when traveling through construction zones. Planning ahead and allowing extra time for trips will be important during the project.
Led by the City of Grand Forks in partnership with the North Dakota Department of Transportation and BNSF Railway, the project is expected to not only ease traffic but also improve safety and support future growth across the community.
