West Fargo reminds residents to redirect sump pump discharge outdoors starting April 15

West Fargo, North Dakota – West Fargo residents are being reminded to take action as seasonal conditions shift, with city officials urging homeowners to redirect sump pump discharge outdoors beginning Wednesday, April 15. The requirement applies to all properties across the city, including those that were previously granted winter variances.
City officials say the change is necessary as snowmelt and spring rainfall increase pressure on local infrastructure. When sump pumps discharge into the sanitary sewer system during these periods, it can overwhelm the system and lead to serious issues, including backups and environmental concerns.
Outdoor discharge helps prevent system strain
By directing sump pump water outside, residents play a direct role in protecting the city’s sanitary sewer system. Officials explained that this practice helps reduce the risk of sewage backups inside homes and prevents partially treated wastewater from entering the Sheyenne River. These risks tend to rise during periods of heavy runoff, making proper drainage especially important during the spring season.
Residents are also being cautioned about how they position their drainage hoses. Running hoses across sidewalks or allowing water to pool in walkways is not only unsafe but also against city regulations. These situations can create slipping hazards for pedestrians and may lead to enforcement action if not corrected.
City officials are encouraging residents to check their systems early to avoid last-minute issues. For those who may have questions or need clarification about the requirements, assistance is available through the Public Works Department at 701-515-5400.
