Man arrested after shooting in school parking lot leaves worker injured at Heritage Middle School

West Fargo, North Dakota – A morning incident at Heritage Middle School in Horace led to a rapid law enforcement response after reports of gunfire left one adult injured, though officials confirmed that no students or school staff were harmed. The situation unfolded at approximately 9:46 a.m. on Monday, April 13, prompting immediate concern and swift action from multiple agencies.
Authorities were dispatched to the school, located at 6350 76th Ave. S., after receiving reports that shots had been fired in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers found that an adult male had sustained a gunshot wound to the hand. Officials described the injury as non-life-threatening, and the victim was quickly attended to as law enforcement secured the area.
Quick response prevents further danger
A West Fargo Police Department school resource officer was already present on campus at the time of the incident and took immediate steps to secure the school. This ensured there was no ongoing threat to students, teachers, or staff inside the building. Additional officers from the West Fargo Police Department and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrived within moments, reinforcing security and assisting with the response.
Investigators later determined that the incident was not connected to the school itself. According to authorities, the victim and the suspect were known to each other through their employment. Both individuals were part of a construction crew working on an extension project at the school. Officials confirmed that neither person was associated with West Fargo Public Schools in any official capacity.
The suspect was identified as Garmonyou Dougar Wiles, a 40-year-old man from Fargo, North Dakota. He was taken into custody and now faces several serious charges, including felony reckless endangerment, felony aggravated assault, and felony terrorizing. Authorities indicated that additional charges may still be filed as the investigation continues.
Multiple agencies worked together during the response, including the West Fargo Police Department, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Metro Area Street Crimes Unit, West Fargo Fire Department, and Southern Valley Fire & Rescue. Their coordinated efforts helped stabilize the situation quickly and ensure the safety of everyone on campus.
Law enforcement personnel remained at the scene following the incident to collect and process evidence. In the aftermath, officials also took steps to support students and staff. Comfort dogs are being made available throughout the week across Horace schools to help learners cope with any stress or anxiety caused by the incident.
