Residents in Fargo urged to redirect sump pump discharge to prevent system overload during warmer months

Fargo, North Dakota – The City of Fargo is reminding residents across the metro area to check their sump pump connections as warmer weather arrives, warning that improper setups could lead to serious sewer issues and property damage.

Officials with the Regional Water Reclamation Facility say the seasonal rule is now in effect, requiring homeowners to make sure sump pumps are not connected to the sanitary sewer system. From March 31 through October 1, all residential sump pumps must instead discharge into the storm sewer system or be directed safely away from homes.

This annual requirement is designed to protect the city’s sewer infrastructure during months when snowmelt and rainfall increase water flow. When sump pumps are incorrectly connected to sanitary sewers, the system can become overwhelmed in a short time.

Proper connections help prevent costly damage

Residents are advised that there are several approved ways to handle sump pump discharge. One option is a direct connection to a storm sewer line. Another method is allowing water to drain onto the ground, but it must be at least 20 feet away from the home to avoid foundation issues. A third option involves using a buried line that carries the water to the curb.

Before making any changes, the city urges homeowners to check that discharge lines are clear and not frozen or blocked. A clogged or frozen line can prevent proper drainage and create additional problems once the system is redirected.

City officials stress that keeping sump pump lines connected to the sanitary sewer during the restricted period can quickly overload the system. This can result in sewer backups, which may cause damage inside homes and create costly repairs for residents.

The reminder comes as part of the city’s ongoing effort to manage water flow and reduce strain on public systems during peak seasons. By following these guidelines, residents can help prevent avoidable issues and keep both their property and the city’s infrastructure protected.

Anyone with questions or concerns about sump pump connections is encouraged to contact the Compliance Group with the Water Reclamation Utility at 701.461.7867. Officials say taking a few minutes to check connections now can help avoid major problems later in the season.
