City of Fargo names longtime officer Travis Stefonowicz as interim chief of police after leadership change

Fargo, North Dakota – The City of Fargo has named a new leader for its police department following a recent retirement, marking a key transition for local law enforcement as officials begin the search for a permanent chief.
Assistant Chief Travis Stefonowicz has been appointed as Interim Chief of Police and took the role earlier this week, on Monday, March 30, 2026. The decision was approved by the Fargo City Commission during its regular meeting Monday night, coming just days after former Chief Dave Zibolski officially retired on Friday, March 27.
City leaders pointed to Stefonowicz’s long history in law enforcement and deep ties to the department as central reasons for the appointment.
“Assistant Chief Stefonowicz brings more than two decades of law enforcement experience, strong leadership and a deep understanding of this department and community,” said Fargo City Administrator Michael Redlinger. “His steady, thoughtful approach and commitment to both public safety and officer wellness make him exceptionally well-suited to lead The Fargo Police Department as we move forward with the process of selecting the next Chief of Police.”
Decades of experience shape new interim leadership
Stefonowicz’s career in policing spans more than 20 years, including service both inside and outside of North Dakota. He joined the Fargo Police Department in May 2002 after working as a police officer in Aurora, Colorado, and serving as a dispatcher with the Red River Regional Dispatch Center.
Over the years, he has taken on a wide range of roles that reflect both operational skill and leadership growth. He spent nine years with the Red River Regional SWAT Team, where he served as an Operator, Basic Training Instructor, and Team Leader. His performance in law enforcement has earned him several major recognitions, including Fargo Police Officer of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, and North Dakota Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.
His academic and professional training further support his leadership position. Stefonowicz holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a focus on Human Resources. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy Session number 277, a program known for preparing law enforcement leaders at a national level.
In October 2023, North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley appointed him to the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board, placing him in a role that helps guide law enforcement standards across the state. In 2024, he attended the Senior Management Institute for Police Session number 92, becoming the first graduate from North Dakota to complete that program since 1989.
Within the Fargo Police Department, Stefonowicz has steadily risen through the ranks, serving as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and eventually Assistant Chief, a role he has held since July 2021.
Focus on stability and continued service
During his time as Assistant Chief, Stefonowicz played a key role in shaping department operations. His responsibilities included overseeing resource allocation, managing personnel, guiding training efforts, and supporting community-oriented policing strategies. He also helped lead important initiatives, such as the development of employee wellness programs and the launch of the department’s first Fargo Police Academy.
“I am honored to step into this role and continue serving alongside the dedicated men and women of The Fargo Police Department,” said Interim Chief Travis Stefonowicz. “Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with individuals who are deeply committed to this profession and to our community. During this period of transition, my focus will be on providing consistency, stability and support for our team while we strive to provide the high level of service our community expects and deserves.”
City officials confirmed that the process to select a permanent Chief of Police will begin soon, with more details expected to be shared at a later time. In the meantime, Stefonowicz will guide the department through this transition period.
Media members will have an opportunity to speak with the interim chief during scheduled interview sessions on Wednesday, April 1. The interviews will take place from noon to 2 p.m. at Gateway Commons inside Fargo Police Headquarters, located at 105 25th Street North, with individual sessions limited to about 10 minutes to allow broad participation.
