Mandan Memorial Highway project moves forward as Phase 1 construction work resumes

Mandan, North Dakota – Construction activity is set to pick back up in Mandan as crews prepare to resume work on a major roadway improvement project along Memorial Highway. Beginning Monday, March 23, Phase 1 of the project—focused on the east end of the corridor—will move forward once again after a pause, bringing renewed progress to a multi-year effort aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving travel conditions.

Drivers in the area may start to notice construction crews and equipment returning in the days leading up to the restart. While activity will increase, officials say there will be no immediate changes to traffic at the start. However, that will gradually shift as work continues.

Underground work and roadway upgrades begin

The early phase of construction will center on underground improvements between 32nd Avenue SE and 43rd Avenue SE. This portion of the project includes the replacement of sanitary sewer lines, installation of a new water main, and the addition of storm sewer inlets. These upgrades are designed to strengthen the infrastructure beneath the roadway before surface work begins.

Once underground work is completed, crews will move forward with concrete paving, marking a visible step in the transformation of the highway. The project also includes several key upgrades aimed at improving traffic flow and safety.

Planned improvements for Phase 1 include new concrete paving along Memorial Highway, enhancements at intersections such as 40th Avenue, 43rd Avenue, and 46th Avenue, and the extension of a southbound left-turn lane at 46th Avenue. In addition, a shared-use path and sidewalks will be installed along the corridor, providing safer options for pedestrians and cyclists.

Phase 1 is expected to be completed by mid-summer, marking an important milestone in the overall timeline.

As construction progresses, drivers should be prepared for changing traffic patterns. Temporary lane shifts, occasional closures, and construction-related delays are expected. Despite these disruptions, access to local businesses will remain open throughout the project.

Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the project is expected to begin later this spring on the west end of the corridor. The full reconstruction effort will span two years, covering 2026 and 2027, and will extend from the intersection of Main Street and Memorial Highway to 32nd Avenue SE.

Officials are reminding motorists to stay alert while traveling through construction zones. Slowing down, following posted signs, and exercising caution will be important as crews work to complete the upgrades.

The project represents a long-term investment in Mandan’s transportation system, aiming to improve road conditions, support future growth, and create a safer and more efficient route for everyone who travels along Memorial Highway.
