Burleigh County officials warn residents about scammers posing as sheriff’s office employees demanding payment
Bismarck, North Dakota – A growing wave of scam calls has prompted a warning from law enforcement in Burleigh County after residents reported multiple suspicious phone calls over the weekend. Officials say the callers are posing as sheriff’s office employees and attempting to pressure people into sending money they claim is owed to the department.
Authorities emphasized that these calls are fraudulent and designed to create fear and urgency. According to the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department, scammers are pretending to represent the agency and demanding payment over the phone. The department stressed that “the sheriff’s office will never call anyone to request payment over the phone.”
Jury Duty Scam Also Circulating
Law enforcement agencies in Burleigh and Ward counties have also issued warnings about a separate but similar scheme involving jury duty. In these cases, scammers claim to be deputies and tell residents they failed to appear for jury duty and must pay a bond immediately to avoid arrest.
Officials from the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office and the Minot Police Department clarified that these calls are fake. They stressed that officers will never contact individuals by phone regarding federal warrants or missed jury duty obligations, nor will they demand payment or personal details over the phone.
These scams often rely on intimidation tactics, hoping victims will act quickly out of fear. Residents may be instructed to send money through unusual methods or provide sensitive personal information.
Authorities urge anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and contact their local law enforcement agency using an official phone number. Residents who may have already shared information or sent money are encouraged to file a report as soon as possible.
Law enforcement officials continue to remind the public to remain cautious and verify any suspicious requests. Staying alert and spreading awareness can help prevent others from falling victim to these increasingly common phone scams.
