North Dakota honors Fargo police officer for outstanding work identifying drug impaired drivers and improving road safety

Fargo, North Dakota – The Fargo Police Department is celebrating one of its officers after Officer Josh Marlow received statewide recognition for his work fighting impaired driving and improving roadway safety across North Dakota.
Officials announced that Marlow was named North Dakota’s Drug Recognition Expert of the Year during the Vision Zero Partner Conference held May 11 in Bismarck.
The award is presented to law enforcement officers who show exceptional commitment to traffic safety, particularly through their work identifying drug-impaired drivers and helping reduce deadly crashes and serious injuries on North Dakota roads.
The recognition was part of the Vision Zero Traffic Safety Awards, which honor individuals and agencies across the state for leadership, service, and dedication to improving roadway safety.
Specialized Training Helps Identify Drug Impaired Drivers
As a certified Drug Recognition Expert, often referred to as a DRE, Officer Marlow has received specialized training that allows him to evaluate drivers suspected of being impaired by drugs.
Officials said DRE officers use evidence-based methods and structured evaluations to determine whether drivers may be under the influence of drugs, helping support both law enforcement investigations and public safety efforts.
The Fargo Police Department said Marlow’s work has played an important role in raising awareness about the dangers connected to drug-impaired driving while also strengthening efforts to prevent crashes and injuries.
“I’m incredibly honored to receive this award,” said Officer Josh Marlow. “Traffic safety is a responsibility I take seriously every day, and this recognition reflects the support of my department, my team and our shared commitment to keeping North Dakota roads safe.”
Department leaders praised Marlow’s professionalism and commitment to public safety, saying the award reflects both his expertise and his continued dedication to protecting communities throughout the state.
Officials added that his recognition highlights the growing importance of identifying impaired driving cases involving drugs, which law enforcement agencies across the country continue to confront alongside alcohol-related driving offenses.
The Fargo Police Department congratulated Marlow on receiving the honor and thanked him for his ongoing service and commitment to roadway safety efforts in North Dakota.
