North Dakota author Barb Solberg to present her award recognized novel “What We Leave Behind” at Fargo Main Library event

Fargo, North Dakota – Residents in Fargo will soon have an opportunity to step into the past through storytelling and history as North Dakota author Barb Solberg prepares to visit the downtown Main Library for a special literary event. The Fargo Public Library will host a public reading and book signing on Monday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m., giving attendees a chance to hear directly from the author about her work and creative journey.

Solberg will present selections from her 2022 historical novel, “What We Leave Behind,” a work that traces the experiences of Norwegian immigrants who traveled to America seeking hope, stability, and a better future. The novel is deeply personal, drawing inspiration from Solberg’s own ancestors and their migration story. During the event, she will share how the book came to life, discuss the research that shaped its historical setting, and explain the writing and publishing process behind the project.

A Story Rooted in Heritage and Recognition

“What We Leave Behind” has gained notable recognition beyond the region. The novel was selected as a 2025 North Dakota Great Reads from Great Places selection at the National Book Festival, a prestigious program sponsored by the Library of Congress and the North Dakota Center for the Book. This honor highlights the book’s cultural value and its role in preserving stories tied to heritage and migration.

Following the reading, guests will have the opportunity to meet Solberg during a book signing session. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event. Organizers note that registration is not required, and the program is free and open to the public.

The Fargo Public Library reminds attendees that adults must accompany children ages 9 and younger. Individuals who need accommodations to participate are encouraged to contact the library in advance so arrangements can be made. Accessibility requests can be submitted by email or phone at least three business days before the event.
