City of Fargo introduces modern parking system to enhance downtown accessibility and convenience

Fargo, North Dakota – The City of Fargo is introducing a modern, technology-driven parking experience in downtown Fargo with the launch of a new automated system at the Roberts Commons Garage, located at 217 Roberts St. N. City officials say the upgrade is designed to make parking easier, faster, and more secure for residents, downtown employees, and visitors traveling to nearby businesses, restaurants, and offices.
The secured garage now uses automation and camera technology to create a smooth, frictionless process for entering, parking, and exiting the facility. The system is intended to reduce delays while improving convenience and safety.
How the New System Works
Cameras positioned at the entrance automatically detect vehicles and trigger the roll-up doors to open and close. After entering, drivers park in an available space. The system links the parking session to the vehicle’s license plate using camera recognition.
To activate a session, drivers must scan a QR code posted throughout the garage. After scanning, they enter their license plate number and contact information, select the length of stay, and submit payment if required. Once registered, users receive a digital receipt containing a PIN code. This PIN is required for pedestrians to re-enter the garage and access their vehicles.
When leaving, drivers simply pull forward to the overhead door, which opens automatically for exit. City officials note that all vehicles must be registered, even during free parking periods.
Free parking is offered daily from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. and on weekends from 5 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Monday.
Rates and Payment Options
The garage offers a tiered rate structure designed for flexibility:
-
0 to 2 hours free
-
2 to 4 hours cost $3
-
4 to 6 hours cost $5
-
Daily maximum rate is $8
Drivers can pay using Apple Pay, Google Pay, and major credit cards. Monthly parking is also available starting at $140 per month.
City officials encourage drivers to visit FargoParking.com for complete details or to sign up for monthly parking. The upgraded system reflects Fargo’s ongoing efforts to improve downtown accessibility while providing a modern parking solution that meets the needs of a growing city.
