Fargo wins best tasting drinking water award in North Dakota for third time in five years

Fargo, North Dakota – The City of Fargo has once again earned statewide recognition for the quality of its drinking water, winning the title of best tasting water in North Dakota for the third time in five years.

The latest award was presented during the annual North Dakota Water & Pollution Control Conference held this week in Bismarck, where Fargo competed against other municipalities from across the state.

The city previously received the same recognition in 2022 and 2023, making this year’s victory another major achievement for its water treatment operations.

The competition, sponsored by the North Dakota section of the American Water Works Association, required participants to evaluate drinking water samples without knowing which communities supplied them.

Conference attendees tasted water from several municipalities before selecting Fargo as the winner.

The recognition also means Fargo is now eligible to compete in the national best tasting drinking water competition scheduled for June 2027.

Fargo has already experienced success at the national level. During the 2024 competition, the city’s drinking water finished second in the People’s Choice category.

Mayor Josh Boschee praised the employees responsible for maintaining the city’s water supply and emphasized the importance of their daily work.

“We are incredibly proud of our staff at the Regional Water Treatment Plant and grateful for their hard work. This year’s state award is a great recognition of their efforts and the City’s continued commitment to providing safe, high-quality drinking water to our community,” Mayor Josh Boschee said.

Fargo Water Utility Director receives major recognition for years of service

The conference also brought individual recognition to Fargo Water Utility Director Troy Hall, who received the George Warren Fuller Award for his contributions to the water supply field.

The award is presented annually by each section of the American Water Works Association to recognize individuals who have demonstrated distinguished service in the industry.

Hall has served the Fargo community for more than 14 years and currently oversees the Regional Water Treatment Plant.

The facility plays an important role in supplying drinking water to thousands of residents across the region, serving Fargo, West Fargo and part of the Cass Rural Water District.

His responsibilities include overseeing operations that help ensure these communities continue receiving a dependable supply of treated drinking water.

Mayor Boschee praised Hall’s leadership and described the award as recognition of both his personal dedication and the efforts of the employees working under his direction.

“The Fargo area is extremely lucky to have a public servant as dedicated as Troy Hall, who has served our community for more than 14 years. His recognition with the George Warren Fuller Award is a testament to his leadership and all the work he and his team do every day to make sure we continue to have exceptional drinking water,” Mayor Boschee said.

The two awards highlight different aspects of Fargo’s water operations, with one recognizing the taste of the city’s drinking water and the other honoring the leadership behind its treatment and delivery.

With another statewide victory secured, Fargo will have an opportunity to compete against water providers from across the country in June 2027, seeking further national recognition for its drinking water.
