Fargo hotel’s pool chemical incident results in multiple children falling sick

Fargo, North Dakota – In an unfortunate incident, a number of children fell ill due to a hazardous chemical mishap at a hotel’s swimming pool.

The mishap occurred at La Quinta Inn & Suites, located on 46th St. S. in Fargo, as reported by the local fire department. The initial distress call was received around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, indicating multiple children suffering ill effects from an apparent chlorine spill.

Upon the fire department’s arrival at the scene, numerous individuals had already evacuated the premises. Firefighters promptly undertook an assessment to gauge the severity of the chemical spill. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the leaked substance was not merely chlorine, but a mix of various acids, typically used for pool water treatment.

Preliminary findings suggest that the incident transpired when an employee inadvertently dropped a container filled with the acid during routine pool maintenance, leading to the formation of a harmful chemical cloud.

Officials have disclosed that between eight to ten children experienced symptoms including airway irritation, coughing, and nausea, with some also reporting vomiting. Furthermore, one individual required emergency transportation due to minor injuries sustained from the incident.

Following the event, ventilation measures were implemented and the affected area was deemed safe after approximately an hour and a half. The incident was confined solely to the pool area, which will remain off-limits until further water testing can be conducted.

It has been reported that the total quantity of the spilled chemical was less than two gallons.
